A glimpse into the future of the Georgia Viaducts and the last significant waterfront area in Downtown Vancouver

Bio

Kevin McNaney is Assistant Director of Planning for the City of Vancouver and is responsible for the Downtown, which has the highest density of residents and is the premier business district in the Province of British Columbia, Canada.

As Assistant Director of Planning, Kevin oversees planning and development for the entire downtown peninsula. Over the past decade Kevin has been responsible for numerous high-profile planning programs including the Metro Core Jobs Plan, the Vancouver Views Review, the expansion of the “Higher Buildings”, and an ever increasing number of major development projects that have transformed the downtown and its waterfronts into a vibrant, mixed-use area. More recently, he oversaw a plan for the West End community and Vancouver’s first 30-year plan for the Downtown Eastside, one of the most economically and socially challenged neighbourhoods in Canada.

Kevin has been appointed by the City of Vancouver to lead the development of the last significant waterfront area in Downtown Vancouver, Northeast False Creek (NEFC). As Director of the NEFC Project office, Kevin leads a large team of multidisciplinary staff who are tasked with replacing the Georgia and Dunsmuir Viaducts (the only portion built of a failed experiment with freeway construction in inner Vancouver) with a new surface road system, a mixed use neighbourhood for 10,000-15,000 residents and 5,000-6,000 jobs, a large waterfront system of new parks and open spaces, and a vibrant new commercial and retail waterfront district.

The NEFC waterfront area is likely to result in over CDN$1 billion in public amenities through significantly higher private investment (vancouver.ca/nefc). Prior to the City, Kevin worked in the private, academic and non-profit sectors on sustainable planning projects in Canada and South-East Asia. Kevin has a Bachelor degree in Urban Systems and Environmental Studies (McGill University) and a Master of Planning degree (University of British Columbia).
