Revisiting Residential Title Insurance post Lin vs. CIBC



Brett Horton, Stewart Title Guaranty Company

Brett Horton is Stewart Title’s Counsel, Commercial Business Development for Western Canada.  At Stewart Title his role includes helping clients understand how title insurance can be used in commercial transactions as well as identifying new market opportunities. 

Brett completed his undergrad in philosophy at McGill University and obtained his law degree from UBC.  He was called to the bar in 2004.  Prior to joining Stewart Title in 2013, Brett operated his own law firm providing commercial and real estate services.

Brett is a former director of the Mortgage Investment Association of BC and currently holds positions with the Canadian Bar Association, International Blockchain Real Estate Association, and the Canadian Commercial Real Estate Lenders Association. 

Brett lives in the Fraser Valley with his wife and three children.  


Karen Carteri, Nathanson Schachter & Thompson LLP

Ms. Carteri is a trial and appellate lawyer.  She joined NST as a partner in 2016.  Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Carteri was a partner in the Vancouver office of a national law firm where she practiced for 14 years and where she was leader of the firm’s Vancouver office litigation group.

In 2015, Ms. Carteri received the Lexpert Rising Stars: Leading Lawyers Under 40 Award which recognizes leading lawyers in the Canadian legal community.

Ms. Carteri appears regularly as counsel before the B.C. Supreme Court and Court of Appeal and before various administrative tribunals.  Ms. Carteri represents clients in a wide range of commercial and business disputes, with experience in shareholder, director and corporate control disputes and remedies, major commercial real estate and property development disputes, commercial lease disputes, banking/financial services litigation and security enforcement litigation.

Ms. Carteri is active in the community, including as a member of the board of the Association of Women in Finance as Corporate Governance/Secretary (since 2013), member of the Canadian Bar Association of BC Business of Law Committee (since 2014), and recent appointee to the Canadian Bar Association of BC Advisory to the Judicial Council of BC Committee.

Mark Baron, MIABC Vice President and Partner with Richard Buell Sutton LLP

Mark Baron is a partner with Richards Buell Sutton LLP and the leader of the Commercial Lending Practice Group.  His preferred area of practice is commercial lending, but he has significant experience in commercial real estate transactions and insolvency.  Mark regularly acts for chartered banks, credit unions, life insurance companies, private lenders, public institutions and large private companies in commercial lending transactions.  He advises on all manner of secured loan transactions from complex syndicated mortgage loans to asset-based commercial loans, including all ancillary matters corollary to these loan structures.

He serves as the Vice President and Counsel to the Mortgage Investment Association of British Columbia.  Mark is a regular contributing author and presenter for the Continuing Legal Education Society of BC.  He is also a member of the board of directors for the Canadian Mental Health Association, Vancouver Fraser Branch, and was tasked with the legal responsibilities of overseeing the amalgamation of three long-standing branches into the current branch.
